Deciding On A Vocational Career Path
Everyone goes through important phases in their life. Critical decisions have to be made and there is a lot at stake. This will happen a number of times through life, but making the change from child to adult is when some of the biggest ones arise.
As a young adult, just finishing up your high school education, you know you have a load of crucial decisions and critical steps ahead of you. You’ve probably heard it from the adults in your life over and over. It’s time to be responsible and get some direction in your life! The world is opening up to you, and you need to decide which path you want to take through life.
One of the very important choices you will have to make is on a vocational career. What you decide to do for employment will affect you for the rest of your life. How you go about obtaining that employment is critical, too. What you do now will determine what type of job you will qualify for in your chosen field.
Of course you can get straight to work, if you know what you want to do. Although this may give you instant gratification and a break from learning for a while, it is not very likely to be either very financially rewarding or personally fulfilling. Sure, you can get by for a while, but any job you can get straight out of high school is highly unlikely to bring long term satisfaction.
This is why it’s best to start thinking early on about a vocational career. What are you interested in? What are you good at? What do you see yourself doing ten years from now? What will bring an acceptable income? These are all important questions to ask yourself.
When you’ve answered those questions, you will hopefully come up with some idea or ideas of what field you would like to train in to get started in a good career for you personally. Now you need to ask yourself what kind of training will put you where you want to be career-wise? How much time and money can you invest in an education or training?
If you have time and money, you can attend a four year college to earn a degree that will help you find a good job. If not, or even if you just want to develop very specific skills, a vocational or career school might be the thing for you.
Attending a vocational school can give you a degree or certification in the field of your choice in a matter of only a year or two. You will learn only that which will contribute to make you a better and more valuable employee. This in turn will give you confidence and a greater sense of fulfillment in your occupation.
